How to move a blog from Blogger to Wordpress

Why did I want to change

Form many people their first blog is on blogger, it certainly was mine when I started a year ago. I had subsequently set up a WordPress blog and was impressed with the featuers of WordPress compared to blogspot - though I think WordPress doesn't do images well, OK but not well.

So running two blogging programs was a bit silly and I thought I would transfer my blogspot blog sometime. What made me get on with though was two things that happened on the weekend:

  1. I discovered that if I had got any page rank or other SEO from my blogspot blog I would loose it when I moved from blogspot! Not nice - fortunately ? I don't have any ranking yet
  2. Blogspot no longers allows non-google people to leave a link to their blog - the one that's visible when you click their name. This is a new change (Dec 07) and will probably been a huge decrease in comments on blogger blogs of non-blogger commentators. The link is really part of the commentators identity - most people wouldn't know who I was if I couldn't use that link!
  3. I decided to enrol in a pay per post program, where you are paid to blog on advertisers subjects, and discovered that a lot of advertisers don't use blogspot blogs. If wouldn't recommend the PPP program now -Google has reduced PageRank of bloggers using it, which means in turns there are limited options to make money from the program itself

List of things to change over after the move

Once you are happy that every thing is up and running on the new WordPress blog here are some of things you need to do:

  • Change your email signatures on email and forums to link to the new domain

  • Add tracking code such as Google Analytics and 103bees to the new domain

  • Add the new domain to RSS feed services such as feedburner

  • Inform any networks or affiliates of the new domain name if necessary

  • Put a message up on the old blogspot blog that the blog has moved to the new domain - I may delete the old messages as well - I am not sure on that yet That will inform any subscribers of the change too as they will have to resubscribe to the new domain name

Converting Posts and Comments

OK my setup- your mileage may differ: current version of blogger and WordPress 2.3 hosted on Dreamhost

  1. Buy your domain name - so if you have been using myname.blogspot.com you might want to buy myname.com if its available.

  2. Setup WordPress on your new domain - I left the default theme first off to keep things simple

  3. On WP go to the admin panel manage/import and click "blogger" - you will be asked to confirm by google that WP can connect to your blogspot blog.
  4. That's it - all the posts and comments for over a year cam accross clearly for me.

Caution

I noticed that the photos in my posts didn't come accross - they appear OK in WP but are still hosted on blogger which I am not very happy about.

No - Ifound that the blogger entries stayed for a number of months after I had moved the posts over. Once you think you are done its worth going thru every post - ie click the title and make sure that the url isn't pointing back at blogger still!

thank you for that useful bit of information. I believe that I have now outgrown blogger.com , so I'll be getting my own hosting (I already own the domain) and transferring it to wordpress.

Usually we loose permalinks while migrating from blogger to wordpress. I faced this problem when I migrated. there is a tool at http://www.psypo.com/2008/12/export-from-blogger-t that can help you migrate to wordpress from blogger without loosing permalinks.

Hi Lissie,

I have a few blogs on blogger, and I did import them to Wordpress.

I do have a website of my own, and I loaded joomla onto it. I did try wordpress, which I found so easy to import my blogs, but as you say the pics are still pointing to blogger, as they are hosted there.

Now I have Joomla on there, I don't really think I like it that much, so I'm going to go back to Wordpress again and load my blogs onto my own website.

Questions?

how come I could only import 25 blogs in one go onto Wordpress?

I wanted to import all 50+ but it wouldn't let me; any reasons why?

Also, do yo think I'll do OK with Wordpress instead of Joomla to base my website on?

I want to put adsense onto my website, so will Wordpress on my own website let me do this simply, and easily?

I also have a few hubpages, so how do you import a Blogger blog to Hubpages?

I tried it, but the HTML messed up and it didn't work.

Please let me know.

Hi Mark, first off I don't know Joomla - I understand its a powerful CMS but the vast majority of bloggers use WordPress - and yes you can readily add and manage Adsense on WorPress blogs. I think if you are very techencially savvy then you can fun with joomla - but the rest of us just use WordPress - there are so many plugins (extensions) developed already you don't have to do anything for yourself - just use other people's software - perfect for me! BTW if you are going to try out The Keyword Academy they take you stepby step setting up and configuring a WordPress blog.

You cant import a blogger blog to hubpages - hubpages is not a blogging platform - its closer to an article directory - each hub should be standalone- people's blogposts tend not to be. You can just select cut/paste content if you really want to but you will end up with duplicate content which won't do you much good in terms of the search engine.

You can however use the RSS capsule to display a feed of your blogspot (or WordPress) blogs.

RE 25 blogs - do you mean posts? I'm not sure - its been a long time since I transferred a blog over but there really should be no limit- maybe you will just have to repeat with the next 25 posts.

Hi again,

I'm going to swap to Wordpress now and give the Keyword Academy a go. I can soon reload it on my host and delete joomla.

Wordpress does look so much easier to use I'll say.

All I care is that it will do for me to earn some dosh on the web! If it will do so then it will do for me fine!

As regards the last comment, about 25 blogs, yes I mean sepreate blogs, not posts.

When I get the list of blogs to import on Wordpress, I can see one page of about 25, but I can't see the rest of them ever anywhere. I can't se how to get the rest of them over.

I was wondering if I am missing a tab somewhere due to security cutting out stuff at work, or if there is a limitation. Maybe I am just being silly and missing something obvious.

As you say the pics are still on Blogger, unless you have the time to upload them again. If they work though; they work as far as I am concerned, and it saves the hassle!

So here I go then, experimenting to see if I can make some dosh online!

I sort of sorted it...

Load 25 from blogger, delete 25 from Blogger, reset Wordpress, and then reaload another 25, and so on.

Got all 54 or so on board Wordpress now.

All I am trying to do now is figure out how to get AdSense to appear.

I've loaded the plugins, and got the code from my account in there but can't see the ads.

Is it automatic, or do I have to edit every post?

Do you want Adense within the post or in the sidebar (or both) - for the sidebar use a widget and it will display on all. Within the post you can edit code in manually - or add it to the template. Alternatively use the "easy adsense" plugin - does all of the above and more!

I am using an adsense plugin now, but I am not that impressed with it, so maybe I'll try "easy adsense plugin" if that's the name of it, I can find it on the search.

I am using "adsense now!" but a lot of the ads don't seem relevant to my posts using this.

It's on there now, so I just need to use an analytics plugin maybe.

I left the HTML they supply in easy adsense, I just changed the pub number to my own, so I assume this will be OK now?
