I have a son who's been threatening to buy a kilt for some time now ... we've told him that if he gets the full outfit (sporran, sash, bagpipes, the whole thing) then we'll let him wear it to school one day. But he's got to go the whole hog, not just the skirt/kilt.

Actually there are a couple of private schools which have kilts as part of the boys formal uniform in the senior years: I think as an option though, and of course the schools do have a Scottish background. For the Scots the sporran is essential- though a a simple leather one will do: but not the sash or bagpipes!

I wear a kilt all the time here in France and going to the UK, but there was no space in the questionaire for wear all the time. I wear a sporran going out or shopping but not when walking the dog, working around the house etc. lets face it its only like a handbag and stuff that has to be carried nowadays, so I also have a hip pouch for things like passports

I have 3 Utilikilts and from those I have learned to make my own kilts/skirts which I wear almost 100% exclusively. It's been since May 2006 that I last wore any of my pants to work. Good riddence to denim pants! :~)

I admit that i have worn female clothing off and on for some 40years now and luv to dress in them. truely wish that more people would understand that guys do want to allow fem side to live and except a guys need to enjoy female clothing and submissive feelings

I always get a good laugh when I hear some people say that women should not wear pants because they are men's clothing. Speaking from a religious standpoint I would always point out that back in biblical days men wore skirts and still do in many of those same areas. So what makes a man's clothing or a woman's clothing? The current culture? Then it can change as the years go by. I've got more important fights to fight :)

I dislike the word and connotation of homophobic. Now the traditional is classed as the deviant and the deviant are now the traditional. There is nothing attractive or beneficial for men to wear skirts. The fashions for clothes of either sex today is horrible and adding skirts to it for men would take it down to the bottom.

How about beards and mustaches for women? How about jock straps and urinals for women or a line of pantyhose for men? A line of Boy George cosmetics for men. Where does the madness stop?

In the current world of sexual deviants and molesters and cross dressers, giving them skirts would make their acts easier to accomplish. The world is perverted enough without adding skirts for men.

There will always be naysayers. Personally I am tired of wearing pants ALL the time and being told that my legs etc are not acceptable to be seen by the rest of society. I like skirts as they are very comfortable.

It will be nice when people can just see things for what they are and nothing more. There will be sexual deviants etc regardless of what people wear.

Cross dresser is just a term that is used to oppress men into obediance of boring black and blue .....oh and denim.

I love it Lissie, getting the men in the U.S. to wear a skirt would be quite interesting and if they do , they always choose hoochie skirts, go figure. I believe many men are homophobic which is absurd as I can bet deep inside their souls they are just wanting to wear something cool, and comfortable but are to proud to do it...:)

Sorry issues - I missed out the word 'deviant" to you consider the ancient romans deviant because they wore skirts - trousers weren't invented until around 150 years ago you know! I don't know yoru sex - but I find a good set of legs on a man attractive - the point is that choice is always good and imposing your views on society is always bad - called freedom of expression I think. A Roman Catholic bishops deviant because they wear skirts?

I am just starting to wear skirts in public.I enjoy the freedom of the skirt.I plan on buying more skirts in other colors. Right now I have a mini skirt that is knee linth.My wife is helping me pick the right styles for me. More men need to let there hair down and enjoy there rights.

I am wearing skirts and kilts daily, at home and in public, at work. I have to wear support stockings all the time, with pants impossible because it would increase the problem when heating up the tissue. So what? Wearing skirt was the problem solving. Since I did my legs getting better, and most comments saying that I'm looking better in a skirt than a paitr of pants. How come?

Those who oppose men wearing kilts/skirts, saying they "don't look good in them" are either liars or mentally ill, and need psychiatric help. Men's legs look just as good as those of women. If you think about it, this is very easy to understand. It is a FACT that men have every right to wear them just like women have the right to wear pants. Cant see a problem, skirts look good on a guy. I wear a short skirt on hot days and my wife loves it. I am in good shape, neighbours dont care. Not trying to be a woman just a man (straight) enjoying the comfort factor.

I am a man and wear a skirt most of the time. I just get tired of always having to explain why I am wearing a skirt. My stock answer is now invariably "why not?".

Another thing - I am no trying to dress like a woman or look like a woman. I'm just your regular guy in a skirt.

I find knee length or just above the knee is best - cool, freedom of movement, and long enough to maintain a sense of decency.

To those men who are so totally against the idea, I say try it just once - you might like it!

The question "what should a man wear under his skirt?" is like asking "what should a woman wear under her skirt?" - it is entirely the business of the wearer!

I thought that in America and democratic countries including Australia where I come from practise democratic or freedom of choice, religion and speech. Sure we have the right to comment about the freedom about whether people dress appropiately but there should be a right for people to make their own choice about what clothes they should be able to wear; whether a pair of trousers or a skirt, both female and male SHOULD have this right NOT a particular gender such as a female having exclusive rights to wear a skirt/dress and ordering a male that he has no right. What these so-called democratic countries practise is no different from any dictatorial country such as China or any other communist country where there is no human rights and that people do not have the right of those 3 freedoms of choice. And why do this "democratic" community comment negitavely about a man in a skirt or dress? Why is it comedy hour every time this subject is raised to promote the freedom of choice males want to achieve in other forms of clothing? I feel that the most portion of the community have insecure ideas about a male wearing a skirt/dress and do not understand that males are human and have the same feelings as women. We breathe the same air, we eat the same food, we even work together, play together but we can't wear similar clothes together. We behave like sheep in a brainless community who bleat silly nonsense when a leader of individuality believes that commensense about an idea is very obvious and more comfortable but the "sheep" are so stubborn to accept and discover that what they are seeing is obviously sexual discrimination; sexist to the naked eye. Look around us and see how double standards the community has created. Not only are the "sheep" stupid but blind as well. I live in Mexico City where, as you may imagine, the people is rather conservative. By the way I am a male.

I wore a long black skirt to a new year's eve party last week. I went with my girlfriend. We had talked about it and she said that it's ok. I spent the week talking with another friends, females all of them, and they agreed that if I wanted just had to do it. So there I am on december 31st, singing and dancing with my girlfriend she is wearing a black dress with an open back and a V neck, and I am wearing a white shirt, gray sweater, my "business suit shoes" and an ankle lenght skirt. No body could care less about it.

so?, stop asking for permission. anyway... to whom? just do what you please. But be modest, you dont wear shorts everyday to everyplace, so, for the beginning wear a skirt as long as the pants that you should wear for that given ocassion: be modest

Paul is correct and I also feel that it's past the time for Equality in Fashions. I'm a straight male who wishes for the same freedom and rights to wear what I wish as woman have enjoyed for over 60 years. Mens fashions are dead and six feet deep and it is time for change in mens fashion, for men to enjoy EQUALITY in FASHIONS with woman.

I am a full time skirt wearer. I buy diem & corderoy women skirts, as I do not like kilts. The type of skirts I wear nobody sats anything about. I have had alot of comments about( all good). All men should try skirts at least for 1 week, they just might like it. So all men who dare keep on skirting

in 2010, there should be no stigma attached to a man wearing a skirt. Not too long ago, gay marrige, interratial marrige, single sex adoption and make up for men ie: guy liner and even man bags, (although the French men have always had them. These were thing that were frowned upon by ignorant biggots. I had a black woman and her white boyfriend snigger and point at me in a city center when I was in my casual, knee length, denim skirt and hooded top the other day. I looked vey cool and not at all gay. Not that that should be mocked either. Times change. If only the most simple of things like a guy wearing an item of clothing of his choice, weren't so slow to catch on. I am a tall, slim, attractive, straight guy. I Have the confidence to wear a skirt in public. If more guys had the same amount of confidence, and lack of contept for narrow minded opinions, of some people, (usually women). I think the it would be nice. It's a non threatening garment. If one does feel threatened by a man in a skirt, then who is the one with the problem? Worn with style and coordination, a skirt wont stand out, unless it's a floral affair. I get attention in everyday MENS attire too, but for all the right, male sterotype reasons. I take care of my appearence. I love wearing skirts. More women should encourage their men to wear them. It's great for Male reproductive health. Cool in the summer. Lets face it. If on a Friday night in any town, especially in the UK. Men would be less likely to fight each other after a few beers, if there was a chance that he might show his most intimate parts, or rip his expensive skirt. Lets face it, mens skirts do tend to be more overpriced than their female counterparts. By the way guys, don't fall for that. Check out Ebay and find a style that suits you, beit Male or Female. Knee length, while trying to still look masculine are best. Look at how kilts work. I don't believe that here in the U.S. there are still places where a man can't wear a skirt. I live in Northeastern Ohio and have worn my skirts and skorts for years. When I was a boy of !! yrs of age I liked dresses, not for sexual reasons but for comfort. THATS IT!! I am not GAY, nor do I have inclinations in that lifestyle. Today in 2010 I wear my skirts or skorts out and about daily. I've gone shopping, to the parks and on leisurely walks in the neighborhood. I have yet to be confronted by anyone either male or female. Some women and a couple of guys have asked ne about them. A man in a skirt or skort looks like the same as a man in shorts. He is only crossdressing when he attempts to display himself as female. The correct term for this is not crossdressing but crossover, for that is what he is trying to do.

What about the other way Robert? You say if a guy is crossdressing if he attempts to display himself as female what about the girl who wishes to display herself as a male? Is she a crossdresser also? Why is a male called many names when it comes to wearing opposite gender clothing but a female is only called a "Tomboy". Although women wear men's clothing MOST OF THE TIME there is never any backlash or discussion about "NO WAY!! She's a crossdresser!" or "you're wierd, you wear men's clothing". It seems that the western world is deep into brainwashing fictual theories about men creating their own wardrobe as sexual idiots or weird people. Why is this so? If men can't wear what he likes then I now believe in Father Christmas as this fictitious brainwashing in Western Society is no different as creating Father Christmas, tooth fairy or the Easter bunny. No wonder the kids of today are confused about their mother. She's wearing pants - "Oh! Isn't that what daddy wears?" or "Is that you daddy?" If men aren't allowed to wear a skirt in public then ask yourself "why". If women can wear pants then why can't men have the same choice? Honestly, earthquakes will occur, floods will happen, fires will burn with or without men desiring to wear a skirt. Get the facts NOT the fiction. If a guy wears women clothing as a female is called a crossdresser then a woman wearing men's clothing as a male is called a crossdresser.

in the winter I shave my legs because I wear tights when I ride my motorcycle. last year when I shaved them, my girlfriend said I have sexy legs for a man and couldnt keep her hands off my legs. I love the feel of the tights on. she bought me some sexy lace thigh highs and a garter belt and matching thong to wear they feel great and now she is getting me a skirt. I have worn a mini skirt before and I love the freedom and look of the skirt on. I said that to say this. If a man wants to wear something sexy be it lingerie or a skrit or some other female wear then PUT IT ON. I have been wearing half slips for years now. My wife is used to it and loves it. I mostly wear them at night to bed - great to make in. I wear them sometimes under my pants - slips with a slit on both side. I usually always wear 2 slips - feels great.

I live in the USA, am male, and often wear a skirt or other clothes from the women’s department, including a purse, and I have only been harassed once by a drunk. I usually make no effort to hide the fact that I am a male. American do have a right to wear what they like and I exercise that right and from my experience, people respect that right. Where I live, there are a lot of government facilities with security and police all over, and they are universally respectful to me regardless of what I wear. In fact, I’d say overall people are more friendly to me when I am dressed femininely.

It’s really hard for me to get where this whole “America is just like China” thing is coming from and why someone would say that people don’t have a right to wear what they want in a democracy. Most jurisdictions even have anti discrimination laws on the books to reinforce the right to wear what you want and identify yourself as the gender you feel yourself to be.

There is a big difference between having the right to do something and other people accepting it. I fully respect others’ right to disapprove of what I do, as long as they don’t try to stop me or get physical. I’m not bothered by that, although I rarely get even a disapproving look and only the one verbal incident. People don’t have to agree with me on my hobbies, my politics or choice of car either.

As to whether I look good or not, that’s an entirely different matter. Taste varies so widely no one can please everyone, nor should they try. I choose clothes based on my body shape, season, and what I see women my age wearing. I’m sure there are those who think I look ridiculous since I am a male, and those who think it’s a pretty good look. Tastes change over time, and if the trend of men’s skirts continues to grow, it will become mainstream and accepted. People cite the fact that a few years ago, it was considered improper for women to wear pants. Even after it was accepted for casual wear, pants on women were still not considered appropriate for many settings such as business. Now they can be worn in any setting. Not long ago, flip flops were considered appropriate only for the beach and pool, now they are everywhere. Earrings on men used to be considered cutting edge, now they are routine, and I remember a time when men would never wear shorts to a fancy restaurant or church, now they do all the time.

Crossdressing is a pretty open term. Language is a fluid thing and I for one don’t care to get hung up on labels and semantics. I consider myself to be crossdressing when I wear a wig, make up and false breasts and try to pass as a woman. I like to go out as a woman, but am not very passable. I consider it just wearing clothes when I throw on a skirt to walk the dog.

I have been in many parts of the US and have only been hassled once while wearing a skirt. I often shop in the women’s department of stores, and the sales people are always friendly and helpful. I try things on before I buy them and have a lot of fun shopping.

In case you are wondering, I have been happily married to a woman, have kids and am retired from the military.

Wearing a skirt as a male just is not a big deal. If you want to do it, then go for it.

It is terrible that there are many people in this country who oppose the Declaration of Independence, which gives women AND men the right to the pursuit of happiness. If such bigots feel threatened by a man in a skirt, they should get out of America. As for religious fundamentalists who want to PREVENT men from dressing the way they like, they belong in Iran.

I live in the US and wear what the heck I want. As long as nothing is hanging out what difference does it make. Clothing is just a garment to cover ones-self. I can never understand why wearing a skirt offends some. I can say that most folks just ignore the fact that I have a skirt on. The only real negative comments I got were from some guys, mostly from women I get the question why do you want to wear a skirt? After I tell them its more comfortable they nod in agreement and that's that.

So if you want to wear a skirt guys just do it, there is no law in the US against it, all you have is your own personal prejudices to overcome.

I made a kilt for myself, and liked it so much, I made 3 more. I live in a pretty conservative city, but (so far) no one seems to care when they see a man in a "skirt". I have several kilts I made which are very traditional looking in terms of pleats and aprons, and another which is more like a long skirt than a kilt. I haven't gotten any negative reaction from wearing any of them. And I have to say - the short kilts are far cooler (tempuratures wise) than wearing jeans as I have worn most of my life.

well...i am not exactly male but if you saw me you might think so. I'm a genderfluid. Kind of the way it sounds. I'm fluid between genders and sometimes in the middle. Anyhow, I wear skirts all the time...whenever I can, womens at that. I enjoy they way they feel, much more comfortable than pants. I do think that actual men should adopt wearing them more though. Not to mention wearing womens clothing. Shouldn't be a huge thing. Women are allowed to wear mens pants, shoes, shirts. Think nothing of it. Other way around people have a fit. Some women seem quick to label men in skirts as either gay or feminine. Many men prefer women to be feminine rather than manly. Women in pants are a sight that many of us would rather not see. The current reality is that pants are no longer a manly garment since they are worn by virtually every woman in America. Without a garment exclusively for men anymore some of us have tried wearing a skirt, found it to be extremely comfortable & as a result have donated all of our pants to our relatives or to charity. Women who wear whatsoever they choose have awakened some men to also wear whatsoever they choose. Equal rights for each gender equals no more hypocrisy.

I do wear skirts from time to time and I think a man should have the choice to wear pants or skirts. I find men to look more manly in skirts. Now I limit myself to kilts or pleated plaid skirts just above the knee (max 2 - 3 inches above in summer). I don't want to look like a woman and I am not interested in cross-dressing as well. A fact that men are the problem why not many men wear skirts, not women. Many men have the desire but they are homophobic and are afraid to wear a skirt in public.

Why would any man want to wear pants just because most women do? Can't men accept the reality that pants are no longer a male garment?

I personally would like to see it common for a man to wear a skirt that is designed for the male. I don't think that there is anything wrong with it. If I had the courage I would start but I live in a small town. Not an easy thing to do. A man-skirt would be very comfortable and would probably wear one a lot in the summer. Hopefully things will change.

Shopping Online - skirts have NOTHING to do with being feminine. It is how you ACT that makes you masculine or feminine. I wear skirts and could not be more manly - I hold the doors for women and let them go ahead of me on line. And by the way, to say that men should not wear skirts is no different than the way the Taliban think (they force women to cover their faces and wear traditional clothing). In America, men have every right to wear whatever the hell they want.

yes, when men wearing a skirt that makes them more manly. even with pantyhose or petticoat under. It shows that this men fully accept females, they already learned what does it mean to be equal. It really hasn't any to do with the kind of clothes, but the acceptance.

Women did the same when adopting pants.

@Jack; Hairy legs is a question about aesthetics, wearing pantyhose or stockings is about elegance and comfort. I believe that pantyhose can be very elegant but at the same time not comfortable, see temperature or weather conditions. It can be opposite as well, and pantyhose are not related only to wearing skirted garments and also not only for women.

David: I do not think that Taliban have anything to do with covering faces for women, it is the Islamic culture. It is correct that in America people have the right to wear whatever they want, but it does not say anything about a specific culture.

The last 5 years I got hooked on wearing pantyhose/stockings with shorts and ofcourse my legs are shaved.I first started out with nude shades of stockings,now have worn beige and tan.No one ever seems to notice.This summer I plan on wearing skirts.I will start with a top that does down within inches of the skirt so its not too noticable.Hopefully I will get bolder as time allows.Its totally silly why society won't accept skirts for men,but intime they will.I just know it.

Acceptance is a generational thing. According to books and articles on the web, generation y (those born from 1977 - 1995) are generally accepting of diversity of all kinds (look at their opinion on same - sex marriage - a 2004 survey showed 53% suppport it; that figure rose to 56% in '07). As for skirts, makeup, and heels for men, that figure is probably higher because the gender of clothing is a much less sacredly - held institution than marriage is - the less sacred an institution is, the more likely someone is going to support changing it to fit in with the current times. Even the predecessors to gen y, gen x (born 1965 - 1976) are more open - minded to skirts for men than the Baby Boomers and especially those that came before them (the Silent Generation) - only a minority of those generations support same - sex marriage, so it is probably similar with men's fashion freedom. Having said that, generation z (1996 - 2010) will be even more supportive of these issues than gen y. Of course, I won't generalize - there are seniors that like skirts on men and young people that don't. Also, even 30 years from now, not everyone will like it. Finally, when skirts do become popular, ACCEPTANCE will become universal (or nearly so), but SUPPORT for it won't - there are many bigots that are too hard - heartened to change.

Skirts are in this year.

I live in New Zealand and wear them more than 50% of my time.

There are very few comments but when they do it is positive.

HISTORY shows many men wearing frock coats high heels,

make-up long hair, the Romans had mini skirts in leather.

SO IN THIS DAY AND AGE WHAT WENT WRONG?

I think the USA is one of the problems as it comees from there with movies and sit coms putting guys in skirts down. Their culture has some kind of man in a uniform or dark suit issues.Other cultures including Japan where I lived for many years has a great fashion and freedom.

The only real problem is the lack of skirts designed for men without having to wear work man's boots to give the skirt a man look. That is all crap wear what you want .

Another kiwi here. I frequently wear a sarong, and it is very noticeable how many guys are wearing sarongs in New Zealand this summer. It is no longer restricted to the polynesian community, where the concept problably originated. Nobody sees it as odd or really cares!

My favourite skirt is my mid-thigh black denim which I wear with black opaque tights, military style boots and a hoodie. I'm a 40 year old bloke and I've just been for a meal on valentine's night in that outfit in the City of London. I go out quite often in a skirt and opaque tights, I don't try to pass myself as a female, I'm a bloke in a skirt. It's surprising how many people don't take any notice, of those that do women tend to make eye contact and smile fellas just gawp and do a double take. It's the same in pubs and restaurants, women just get on with it, men stare. I've only had one guy hassle me, he was drunk. They're just clothes. I've been wearing skirts and tights since I was 8, I tried the dress/stockings/heels/make up thing in my teens - it wasn't for me!

I am 64 so have had a long history of skirt wearing.

I differ from most as I do not take adverse comments from any one.I try to make them look silly as pulling out history ,comfort or their hidden agenda.Most people who say bad stuff have a hidden problem and feel threatened in some way.If physical action is required then that too 4th dan black belt helps.

As for Women their agenda is different again as they think I may grab their skirt or dress and look better than them in it.

I would like to be able to go into any store and buy a a skirt that was designed for men. Skirts are very comfortable and it has nothing to do with ones sexuality. The designers should flood the stores with skirts for men and well, we men should be man enough to start wearing them.

It's great to see that more and more men are wearing skirts. I'm man enough! and I wear mini skirts as often as I can. They are extremely comfortable and look really sexy if you've got the legs, and I don't wear tights as I prefer the look of my bare legs! Denim minis would be my favorite and would account for most of my skirt wardrobe. It's time to end the stereotype of the skirt being only women's clothing - though if you really want to argue it, then I'd say look at history - the romans for example (amongst many others) wore them! And I'm going to continue the trend!

I started wearing skirts afew years ago after painfull groin surgery. Very comfortable and eased some of the pain so I have worn skirts around the house ever since. Recently I went hiking in a skirt expecting silly comments or bigotry but nobody bothered. Still havent the nerve to go shopping or down the pub.

Driving and walking in a skirt made for men was very comfy. highly recommended!

Wearing skirts around the house does nothing to further gender equality. Cowardly? A skirt in one of the myriad of female sizes will fit any male unless you are an alien from outer space. Remember that women did not wait until pants were sold in the women's department before they started wearing pants. Their methodology worked as history indicates. Men who are sitting on their asses waiting for skirts in the men's department are wasting their time since the retailers know that men are not wearing skirts. Why sell something that men are not wearing. Is there a reason that men have to be stupid when compared to women? The women got it right. The men may have it right; however, it is very likely that hell will have frozen over before that happens.

I have worn a woman's skirt in public several times & maniy times in private. I have had only one problem when a man objected to the skirts I wore. I left quickly, but otherwise it had been support all the way (except from the wife).

Relatives & friends don't know & I don't wear it anywhere that I expect to be seen by someone I know as I feel this might prejudice any future employment or family life.

I love wearing skirts & other lingerie as it is far more comfortable than the sweaty stuff men have to put up with, generally. I love being a man, too & want both good sides of the coin. I think I could, too if the wife was more supportive.

I live in the Seattle area.Im in my 40's and straight,Not that it anything to do with this subject here.I have a nice black and red plaid pleated skirt that is so comfortable to wear.One warm sunny day i went to the store,and wore my mini skirt.Its actually about 12 inches long or so,give or take.There were 2 guy's,in their mid 20's standing right beside me at the check out.I never got one snicker,point or a laugh as to why i was wearing a skirt.And there were other men and women there also of different ages that saw me.A skirt is such a freedom and a liberated feeling.I feel totally comfortable in a skirt and i carry myself as if i was in jeans.For those that didnt know this,but back when PANTS wear first made,if a female was seen wearing pants she could be sent to jail,And women didnt start wearing pants til about 100yrs ago or less.I see no reason why a guy cant wear a skirt.I have shorts that are the same length as my skirts.So what is the difference if i wear a garment sewn for legs and one that is not ? SAME LENGTH !Women can wear guy clothes and people say "awe,isnt she cute"but if a guy wears women clothes they say "YOU GAY" or "TAKE THAT OFF,THATS FOR GIRLS" what a hypocritical logic is that..So if women want to be treated EQUAL to men,then men can do and wear what women wear and do,so, using that logic of reasoning...RIGHT ? I am a male and I wear skirts more than pants. There is no logical reason why guys should wear a skirt in a masculine way. People forget that it was only 60 years ok that is was taboo for a woman to wear pants, it was considered socially unacceptable. They thought women would look like men and stop being feminine. Women start wearing men’s pants and then it soon become fashionable and socially acceptable. Now women have adopted every aspect of men’s clothing and it’s considered normal. Why then do we still put restriction on men, why can a man not wear a skirt in a masculine way like a women wears pants in a feminine ways.

When a women says she want to wear a pair of pant, society celebrates her right for equality, but when a man say he wants to wear a skirt, his gender identity is brought into question. No one says a woman is crossdressing in pants, no one says that she is a lesbian, so why do we think these things of men. Attitudes towards men’s fashion is extremely sexist and restrictive. Men deserve the right to have the choice to be comfortable. An unbifurcated garment is far more comfortable than wearing pants 24/7 and it is far better for a men’s health. Pants as we know it have only been around for 200 years. Men have worn skirted and dress like garments for centuries, not only this but outside of the west a skirt is worn by men in most cultures and considered a men’s garment and not at all feminine. Function should have nothing to do with gender rather only style. It’s time we have another change in fashion, enough of trouser tyranny, bring back the skirt as a option for men’s clothing. It’s not about feminising men, or blurring gender lines, it about men wearing a skirt in a manly way.

Attitudes towards men’s fashion are extremely sexist and restrictive. Women can wear whatever they like, they have unlimited options depending on how they feel, they no longer have any restrictions. So why do we put these restrictions on men, why is our fashion so restrictive. Why are men told, "Women can wear whatever they like, but men must stick to pants and short", that’s sexist, that a double standard. If men started to say that women must wear skirts and dress only then we would be shot down as sexist, bigoted and controlling, so then, where is the equality. If a woman can wear pants in a feminine way then men can wear a skirt in a masculine way!

Men need to start doing what women did and that is to just start wearing the skirt as MEN, and just like women’s fashion it will become acceptable and fashionable. I am sick and tired of fashion and society telling me that I have no options as a man, so...I will make my own fashion. I will not be told that I cannot have the option of the skirt when I get dressed in the morning. I will shop for skirts and I will wear the skirt in a manly way.

Hi Joshua, There are a few places you can buy men's skirts. In the US you have utilikilt and Amerikilt, to name just a few. In the UK there is Midas clothing, http://www.midasclothing.com/pages/. I wear Skirts all the time at home and often to festivals. I got tired of peoples insecurities making me feel like a weirdo from another planet so I stopped wearing them as a casual dress item in public.

I'm always on the look out for a good man skirt. Kilts are cool but I'd like to find some other options. Thai Skirts are fantastic.

Don't let peoples insecurities stop you from being comfortable and free. The more us guys wear skirts in public the more it will become fashionable, trendy and acceptable just like women in pants. If women gave up just before they won their battle they would still be in dresses. Be incouraged Scott, things are changing quickly and skirt are here to stay for men. You are not alone, there are thousands of guys that are starting to go public. The truth is that people really don't care or they are actually for men's skirts. Hi everyone

Seeing this post I decided to 'man up' and ask the question.

I am a genderqueer, biologically male, who has to suppress my every desires to look/be androgynous/beyond gender as I really am because I live in a way too conservative country (which is Poland) Since I am not psychically strong I can't really wear what I want, because I get beaten up, but i really want to wear skirts/make-up too.

Hence here comes my question:

I want to move out to a different country after I get my M.A degree (which will happen next year in September) and I want to ask for suggestions as to where should I move?

What city/country would I find a place for myself, where I could wear what I want without constantly fearing for my life?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Being an older guy who just discovered skirts (due to a bet) I could not believe the practical side of wearing them for guys! I feel cheated because so many years has passed not knowing the feeling of no "binding crotch seams"! Clearly skirts are better suited for the male anatomy than for the female. It is a sensation no female will ever understand and sadly guys won't either unless they open their minds and loose their homophobia.

For women to achieve equality they should promote skirts for men to help level the playing field. If nothing else it is a good test to see if your guy suffers from homophobia! The "nay saying" guys, while fun at first, will become a problem for women with their controlling red neck, homophobic attitudes later in a relationship yet a guy willing to try a short skirt instead of shorts on a hot day is a guy "secure in his sexuality." This is a good test! Watch out... a real guy who discovers the freedom a short skirt provides will not likely give it up! He will be hooked!

Skirts like pants are not "gender specific" like a bra thus are largely unisex! Anyone can wear them but of course there are styles better suited for men and women. Ever notice how women in pants still look like women yet a guy in a skirt will be accused of "cross dressing" or worse yet it is IMPOSSIBLE for women to "cross dress" because they already wear everything from the mans side of the wardrobe. The word should be banned as sexist.

Seems like people have forgotten skirts were first used by men and men have worn them for thousands of years until the "Puritanical Victorian Era" which men have been unable to shake off yet in 70% of the world today skirts ARE an option for men to wear. It is just the western world that has a phobia about it.

Leading fashion designers ARE trying to put men into skirts and several have said all clothing is basically unisex except for the bra. That concept is likely a long time away but skirts are practical and can be worn now. A company in Seattle Washington sells several million dollars worth of "Kilts" each year to men but be advised a Kilt IS a SKIRT by definition so guys call it what it is... a skirt! A kilt is just a particular kind of skirt that is usually tartan, hot, heavy and expensive and not necessary when there are thousands of styles for women and some look great on men. See these guys in Skirts and note that after seeing so many the guys look "normal" or like any other guy. We are not talking about cross dressing trying to look like a women... just a guy wearing a skirt instead of shorts or pants. A mini skirt sounds too short for the guys BUT IT ISN'T... Note a standard mini skirt sold in family department stores is about 12" long (on an average) and that is the SAME length as mens gym shorts! A "micro mini" at an average of 10" long is the same length as some mens running shorts so "mini" doesn't mean TOO short for anyone! Just wear undies because you will have the same issues as women with a inadvertent flash now and then but if covered so what!

I have discovered most (not all) women find a guy in a skirt "intriguing" so it is a win win for the guys! Guys just don't know it however there are also insecure women and there are those women who are selfish and want it all for themselves! Imagine if men were like that... women would not be wearing pants today.

Gays don't wear skirts so I have no idea why so many men are "afraid" to try on a skirt. Many somehow think a skirt will make them gay! Guys if you want to look like a woman today put on some pants!

The best looking and most practical skirts for guys (in my opinion) are "Cargo Skirts". These tend to have many pockets, plain (non girly), belt loops, and made with tough materials. See www.ebay.com/ and search for "cargo skirt" and see near 1,500 and some of them are perfect for the guys (camo, twill, stretch, etc. all favorable). Guys try one on instead of shorts and see what you have been missing. Better yet: Women... get one of these cargo skirts for your guy and see what happens! You both will be surprised with the positive outcome and help start a trend out of mens boring boring wardrobe and additionally liberate yourselves with more equality to men!

Great post Patagoniakid, I agree with what you say. I often wear skirts in public, I wear hiking/cargo skirts and they look like shorts. Like all the guys here in Australia they wear shorts and t-shirt, I wear a skirt and t-shirt and it look masculine and not different from shorts, yet it feels so much more comfortable and free. I have NEVER had any problem wearing a skirt even in the busiest places. Most people don’t notice and if they do they are completely accepting. Men can look masculine in skirts and if you wear the right skirt no one will see it as odd. Skirts are the most comfortable and healthiest skirt for a man to wear and there is no reason why men cannot have a masculine option in skirts. It’s time that men have the same freedom and options in fashion as women but in a masculine style; if women can wear pants in a feminie way then guys can wear skirts in a masculine way. Society got rid of this silly taboo and prejudices for women 50 years ago, now it is time that it does the same for men

What I've always wanted to know is approximately what percentage of women my age support the idea of men in skirts (I hope at least two - thirds). Finally, how would you compare women 10 years younger than me vs. women in their 60s and older?

To change the world is not easy but if it is going to happen then it is a cultural change, this will only happen when the TV or main stream publications show men of fame wearing skirts not kilts heavy wool things

New Zealand has link with a polynesian and Scotish, culture so wearing of skirts is not so far removed from the cultures.

The main people against skirt wearing are the girl friends because it embarasses them through their friends, so the pressure is on from the second liners the same with guy friends their mates give pressure to your friend being seen with a guy in a skirt.

There needs to be the change in this area.

Also a maunfacture NOT a kilt maker is another change in offering a MAN'S Skirt.

This is the real direction not asking why,

We take action to the problem, writing comments to 90% on here who all are in agreement will not move forward. YES WE ALL AGREE AND WEAR THEM HERE we need to change the minds of the people who are not on here so get out there

The younger say under 40 are boaring BUT more accepting of new or different.Dating but cell phone or E mail stuff. This also depends on where you live as a cultural thing. It appears the USA and Canada are not into men in skirts where places like Japan, Europe New Zealand maybe Australia too, are more with it in this area.

Women over 50 some are for you but at most do not like a man in a skirt. Firstly it embarasses their friend so effects them. Also men in suits (men in black) where then norm for that generation so they are STUCK in the past also the War generation the same but they like a man in a uniform.

It all depends whether you are trying to shock people, make a statement, feel sensual, practicality or for a combination of the above. I have worn a great variety of clothing over the years and found that the eyebrows of the public are only raised for a short time. In many countries of the world a man in a skirt, particularly a long one, wont rate a 2nd glance. The people don't know where you're from and guess it's probably normal in your country. Most of the reaction is your own, created in your own mind.

Put on a skirt and walk out on the street and act as if it's perfectly normal and think in your own mind that it's perfectly normal, don't imagine that everyone is gapeing at you and KNOW that if anyone is, then they're the one with a problem. What the fuck has it got to do with them anyway??

I always wear what I wear for comfort and practicality but like to employ some really beautiful colours that you just don't get in men's conservative clothing. Purples, greens, orange and reds.

Recently, travelling by car in a country where it was quite cool, I bought a long, deep green, velvet skirt to wear on a daily basis, for the reason that it was necessary to wear tights under outer garments when outside to keep warm, but when in the vehicle I got overheated. It's difficult to get your trousers off sitting in a car seat. With the skirt I was warm outside and when I started to overheat in the car just hitched it up to my lap. Filling the car at service stations caused the attendants to momentarily to look me up and down but that was it. Do you think it is more weird than having piercings all over your face or through your tongue?

Wearing Jellabias or kaftans is so comfortable and you can please yourself whether you wear anything underneath or not. YOUR mind is what stops you from doing things, not other peoples.

I generally work at home in a work shirt, strong nylon stretch tights and a knee length tensile skirt. This gives me maximum freedom of movement which, for me, is the most important aspect of skirts and tights.

All my tights are modified by making a hole for my dangly bits to be outside. Otherwise it defeats the freedom and practicality. Naturally, you have to be careful to stay modest, but the scots managed and I have noticed that the occassional glimpse of pink can speed up the heart rate of the opposite sex!!!

I think most blokes don't have the guts to try it.

Objections towards men wearing skirts are nothing but sexist and a double standard. Women advocated for their right to have pants as a part of women’s clothing; they said that it was OPRESSION to be forced into skirt and dresses only. They said that it was sexist and discrimination that simply because of their gender, they could not wear pants....Starting to sound familiar!!! If you said to any women today that she couldn’t wear pants because she is a woman she would fire up and accuse you of being sexist and a chauvinist. Yet women (and men) think that its acceptable to show this SAME sexist attitude towards men when it comes to wearing skirts! They demand their rights to wear what they please yet believe that us men are NOT entitled to the same rights, and that we should be forced to wear only pants and shorts!....sounds like hypocrisy to me! Where’s the logic and justice in saying that women deserve their rights but men do not deserve same equal rights, simply because we are men! They took the most masculine garment and made it feminine. Very well explained, Ryan. I would love to hear more men talking like you because it means thinking this way? Maybe one little correction on the word "cross dresser" because this means actually dresse cross in color and was used for women only in past. But men used it in late Victorian time for dressing of cloth from other gender (not sexes), it was gender specific used. Later it became a negative touch through men, not women.

I already saw some men in skirts and they looked fabolous in it. Men just have one thing to do: be a man and wear what they like in manly manner. Don't copy women because women have their own style to wear whatever they like and that is not restricted to any kind of clothes. Same men have to do.

People today more open minded than in the 90s which means it is on a good way. Hi Ed, The best look for a guy when wearing a skirt is around knee length, about the same length as shorts, which is the same length as a kilt. When a guy wears shorts he doesn’t shave his legs and most people think guys with hairy legs look better. The same rule goes for a guy wearing a skirt at the same length as shorts; it looks good and masculine. Short skirts on the other hand may be another matter. I personal will never wear a short skirt as short is often is associated with femininity in society, and when trying to masculinise the skirt then length is important. So to answer your question, a guy wearing a kilt or a skirt around knee length actually looks masculine, not unsightly.

I have been looking to see if any place can make the single pleat netball skirt with velcro and slider clip on the other side to regular netball skirts and also have it 10cm longer too but have not been able to find a place that can do it cause I think my dad would look good with the rest of the team that are in skirts but that is only my point of view but skirts in general should not matter length or style or shape everyone should wear what ever they feel comfortable in no matter if its a netball skirt,dress ladies 1 piece swimming costume. It's true. Men really are repressed. While no law forbids a.man wearing a skirt, there is tremendous pressure from society to make doing so difficult. The difference between pants and a skirt is the number of leg holes. That's all. I like seeing men's legs. They are more muscular and sexy than ousr yet some women oppose a man wearing a skirt. I recently came across a thread about crop length pants for men and the women were strongly opposed to them. Why? These are people who simply oppose any change. If men wore them a few times they'd realize they are comfortable. They'd have to learn to sit with their legs closed though. LOL. Hers how to start a fashion trend. Have a national day where men wear a skirt in support of breast cancer survivors and research. Then push " beach wraps" for men. Soon men would become used to seeing them and the fashion would catch on. Just don't show up in heels and lipstick. That brings up a good point. I HATE to see a man in a Utilikilt wearing boots. It is an attenpt to look macho but it doesn't look good. So what shoes should a guy in a skirt wear? Loafers? Deck shoes? How about a sandal with a low heel to show off the muscular legs!

Dk, a simple correction. Skirts were actually mens garments and in many countries today still are mens garments. It is NOT about men wearing “feminine” skirts, rather it IS about men RECLAIMING masculine skirted garments, which have always been a men’s garment, worn by men throughout every era of history and still today in many countries. Whether it is the traditional kilt or modern kilt or modern day men’s skirts, MEN are RECLAIMING this garment that was always theirs!

I went back out with a denim above the knee mini skirt and black tights with 5 inch platform heels and did not venture far from were i parked, did not run many people but no real reaction. but now looking to venture into a more public place in chicago but because i am new to opening up like this i am looking for clubs in chicago to go to. I do have above the knee denim, mini denim, and a black mini tennis style, along with 5 inch wedge boots and 5 inch stilletos both have at least platforms. I am a man living in the USA and I frequently wear skirts out in public. I usually wear pantyhose or tights with my skirts except on real hot days. I always wear a nice woman's top and either wear flats or heels. I make no attempt to pass as a woman. I do have very long hair and have my ears pierced twice and often wear large hoop or dangle earrings, even in male attire. I have a lot of fun going out dressed enfemme with virtually no problems at all. It's not as hard as many people think it would be. I do get some strange looks and chuckles, especially when I'm fully dressed in a nice pencil skirt with a real pretty top, panyhose and a pair of four or five inch heels. I've had a lot of nice comments, mostly from women that I rarely receive when dressed in male attire.

Gender fashion is tyranny. Skirts for men are comfortable, practical and have a historical context. Most women only wear them once in a blue moon, out of preference (as is their inalienable right..), so why shouldn't men adpot them by default, before skirts (and men for that matter..) become extinct? I accept that many blokes wouldn't look aesthetically pleasing in a skirt, but do women in leggings really look good?

I would certainly wear them if it ever became socially acceptable, but there is so much prejudice, bigotry and ridicule out there that it won't happen in my lifetime. same with silky underwear underneath which is so relaxing and stress busting.

Anyway I await the inevitable responses, suggesting that I am an old perv, or "gay", whatever...yawn...

I'm in favor of men wearing skirts, but a few things concern me. First, when men adopt skirts, will WOMEN start groping, raping, and "upskirting" the MEN? Second, I've read articles in magazines and the internet suggesting that in 1 or 2 decades, gender roles will be reversed, rather than blurred. Will this happen, and if so, will women FORCE men to wear skirts, heels, makeup, etc.? Can anyone tell me whether or not my fears are just in my head?

I would have agreed with those men. At that time men married young women, as young as 13. You are 100% right. Men wore skirts and dresses before pants were invented. During the Middle Ages, in some cultures, women and men dressed practically alike. Men wore stockings, purses, and fancy hats. In the 1700 and 1800's, other times perhaps, men wore wigs with pride, even curly, lofty wigs. Leonardo da Vinci, the world-famous painter invented high heels for men first. Men also wore pantaloons, a version of bloomers, I suppose. Some men wore corsetts, something like girdles to hold in the bulge. Well, I am defeated. Men, go on and take all of your belongings back! The only other thing left for you to do is get pregnant. I am sure you will find a way to that, too. Just give me the pleasure of witnessing the delivery.

OK. Seriously, most men do not want to wear skirts and other things that ladies wear. I know this, but those who do want to wear them act as if they need special permission from society. That is not the end of the story. People will compliment you to your face, "Jon, that skirt is so hot and looks great on you!" But, behind your back some will say, "Did you see that? He is a hot mess, and he thinks he is fine!" Still, some would definitely like it. Your fathers would be ashamed, and your mothers would cry themselves to sleep and talk to the ministers. Your aunts and uncles would probably try to sign you up for counseling.
